Becoming the Woman You Once Prayed to Be

Becoming the woman you once prayed to be can happen so gradually that you forget to recognize her when you look in the mirror. Black women over 40, take a moment. Look at you, Sis. You made it to this chapter, and there is something here worth celebrating.

I think we can get so focused on what we still want to accomplish that we overlook who we are today. There’s another goal, another responsibility, another thing we feel we should have figured out by now. But when do we pause long enough to acknowledge our growth?

At 50, I want to give myself room to appreciate where I am while still making plans for my future. I want that for you, too.

Becoming the Woman You Once Prayed to Be Means Honoring Your Journey

Think about something you handle differently today than you would have five or ten years ago. Maybe you speak up sooner. Maybe you ask for help. Maybe you finally allow yourself to rest without explaining it to everybody.

Those changes count, even when nobody else notices them.

Some of your growth may have happened during seasons you would never choose to repeat. You can acknowledge what those experiences cost you and still appreciate the choices you made to move forward. You don’t have to be thankful for every painful experience to be proud of yourself.

Sis, give yourself credit for the effort ot took to get here. You know the decisions you wrestled with and the days when taking one small step required everything you had.

Release Comparison and Give Your Timeline Some Grace

It’s easy to feel good about your progress until you start measuring it against somebody else’s life. You see the new relationship, the career announcement, or the beautiful home, and suddenly your own accomplishments seem smaller.

I want us to be careful with that.

Another woman’s milestone doesn’t tell you when yours should happen. Her life has details you cannot see, just as yours does. You can celebrate her and continue working toward what matters to you.

When I think about divine timing. I think about allowing the universe room to work beyond the schedule I imagined. That leaves room for me to take the next step without needing every answer today.

Becoming the Woman You Once Prayed to Be Includes Celebrating Today

What is one thing about life now that an earlier version of you hoped for? It might be more independence, the courage to start again, or simply being kinder to yourself.

Let yourself acknowledge it.

You can be grateful and still want change. You can appreciate your progress while admitting that some things remain difficult. Grace gives you room to keep learning.

Tonight, write down one way you’ve grown and one choice you’re proud of. Spend a little time with those answers before adding anything else to your to-do list.

Sis, you’re already becoming her, one intentional choice at a time. The woman you are today deserves your love and recognition.
