Soft, Secure, and Unavailable for Chaos: The New Energy of Black Women Over 40

Black women over 40, we deserve relationships and everyday lives that leave room for peace. Sis, I keep coming back to this thought: your peace is too expensive for chaos. At this stage of my life, I want to be more intentional about who gets my time and what I’m willing to entertain.
As I navigate life at 50, softness and security mean something to me. I want to feel comfortable speaking honestly. I want to enjoy someone’s company without spending the next day trying to figure out where I stand with them. Those are standards I believe we’re allowed to have.
Why Chaos Can Feel Familiar for Black Women Over 40
Have you ever found yourself holding on to the good moments while making excuses for everything that happened in between? The wonderful conversation. The apology you wanted to hear. The brief stretch when things finally start to get better.
I think it’s worth asking ourselves how much weight we’re giving those moments. Are we enjoying the relationship as it actually is, or waiting for the version we keep hoping it will become?
When emotional highs and lows are familiar, a steady connection might take some getting used to. You may find yourself wondering what’s missing when there’s no guessing game to occupy your attention.
Sis, give yourself room to notice that feeling without letting it make every decision for you. Ask yourself whether you feel respected, heard, and comfortable being yourself. Those answers deserve your attention, too.
Black Women Over 40 Deserve Calm and Connection
I still want laughter, affection, and connection that makes me smile. I also want consistency. I want someone’s actions to match what they tell me, including after a disgreement or a difficult day.
for me, choosing calm means looking beyond the initial chemistry and paying attention to how we treat each other over time. Can we talk about somethng uncomfortable? Is there accountablitily when someone gets it wrong? Do we both make an effort?
That applies to friendships as well. I value friendhships where we can celebrate each other, respect each other’s time, and talk honestly without every concern turning into an argument. We can have differnt opinions and still treat each other with care.
How Black Women Over 40 Can Become Selective With Access
Being selective with access starts with deciding what you have the capacity to give.Yu can care about someone and still decide you’re unavailable for a late-night argument or another conversation that keeps going in circles.
A boundary might sound like, “I’m willing to talk about this when we can speak respectfully.” it might mena letting somene know you need advance notice before making plans. Tje next part is honoring that boundary through your own choices.
I see that as self-respect. I want to be thoughtful about my relationship while also taking my own needs seriously.
Sis, softness needs space. For me, that includes relationships where I can relax, time to myself, and permission to speak back when something respeatedly cost more energy that I can give. In this seasom, I’m choosing stability and making peace part of my standards.
What are you becoming unavailable for in this season of your life? Let’s talk in the comments.
