Black women over 40 stop seeking approval when we finally realize that constantly needing validation from other people can keep us disconnected from ourselves. At this stage of life, I believe confidence starts to feel different. It becomes quieter, stronger, and much more personal.

For many years, we may find ourselves worrying about what people think. We question whether we are making the right decisions, whether people will understand our choices, or whether someone will be disappointed in us. We may even stay in situations longer than we should because we don’t want to be judged for choosing something different.

But somewhere along the journey, something shifts.

You can choose peace.

I also believe black women over 40 stop seeking approval because life teaches us how exhausting it is to constantly perform for other people. Eventually, you realize that trying to make everybody happy usually comes at the expense of your own happiness.

Trust Yourself More

This season of this life is teaching me to listen to my own voice a little more closely. I may still ask for advice, but the final decision belongs to me.

That’s the confidence shift.

When black women over 40 stop seeking approval, we aren’t saying that other people’s opinions never matter. We’re simply deciding that opinions don’t get to control our lives.

And sometimes, the most power
